Our Story
The Sound Mob Productions story begins with a bunch of local DJ's and producers from Sacramento, California. In 1988 DJ David X (aka Little House Hippie, Citizens of The World State) met DJ Eddie Edul (aka Atom B, Cassiocore) at a local Sacramento nightclub. The two wold eventually join residency forces at Sacramento's famous ground breaking Rage nightclub several years later. The MC at that famous club was Lem Crowell (aka Wiggin, Atom B...now know as Mc L-Ski). One of the clubs other nights featured resident DJ Brian Brandon (aka Beat Pirate). In between these events David and a couple other DJ's starting doing a dance night at Sacramento's legendary Cattle Club. One of the new DJ's who was brought in was a 14 year old kid named Matt Hite (DJ A.T.O.T....aka Boy Wonder). David's brother Jeff (aka Endorphine) had met Kyle Brown (aka Tracker, Journeyman, Cassiocore, Citizens of The World State...R.I.P.) at school. The two became well known in the Sac party scene. However their bigger ambition was to start a band... and We Of Sound Mind was born.
Now all of these DJ's and music lovers had become bored with the current state of the Sacramento club scene but Eddie and KSFM mixshow DJ James Presley took a little field trip in early 1991 to New York and saw Frankie Bones and the Storm crew throwing parties underneath the bridges in Brooklyn. Upon return to Sacramento with tales of these insane events The Sound Mob crew was formed and quickly began organizing parties with promoter Sean Christian. They threw the first rave party in Northern California in August of 1991 under the Yolo causeway, a large bridge which connected Davis and West Sacramento.
It was fun playing other people's music at the events and clubs but all these music lovers wanted to MAKE their own music in response to this vibrant new music culture.......and so...Sound Mob Recordings was born in 1992.
After a handful of releases throughout the early and mid 90's the label became dormant. In the last several years plans to revitalize the label slowly began to take shape to not only re-release the original vinyl issues but TONS of unreleased tracks and demos that never saw the light of day. In addition, David X has been producing music throughout this period and will be re-working and releasing those song here on the label. Please check the "releases" page for the latest available productions.
